Situated in the heart of London, the Courtauld is one of the capital's smaller galleries. But even so, the place is absolutely stuffed full of jaw-dropping art!
With its rich and varied collection, the Courtauld takes us on a whistle-stop tour through the history of Western art, from the Middle Ages right up to the present day. But the highlight is probably the gallery’s huge range of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, featuring the likes of Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh.
This impressive collection was kickstarted by Samuel Courtauld, a wealthy industrialist and prolific art buyer. He co-founded the Courtauld Institute (a world-leading centre for the study of the arts) back in 1932 – but it wasn’t until 1958 that its treasures were put on public display.
Originally, the gallery was part of the Warburg Institute in Bloomsbury; but its current location inside the sprawling, grandiose Somerset House is much more exciting!
