With a history stretching back almost a thousand years, the Louvre Palace once served as a residence for the French royal family. It opened as a museum in 1793, at the height of the French Revolution – and has since grown to become the biggest, and most visited, in the world!

Home to a truly mammoth collection of art, the Louvre contains paintings, sculptures, artefacts, and ornaments from the ancient world right through to the 19th century (with a few newer additions sprinkled on top).

This includes iconic works such as the “Winged Victory of Samothrace”, timeless treasures like the “Code of Hammurabi” – and of course, Leonardo da Vinci’s slightly underwhelming masterpiece, the “Mona Lisa”.

With its main entrance marked by I. M. Pei’s once controversial, now iconic glass pyramid, the Louvre truly is a must-visit for anyone who finds themselves in Paris; so, it’s probably worth booking your ticket in advance!
