Founded in 1753, the British Museum is the oldest public national museum in the world. And, with a permanent collection boasting more than 8 million objects, the site remains one of the UK's most popular attractions!
Despite its name, the British Museum is home to artefacts and treasures from across the globe, spanning countless cultures and civilisations. This includes a staggering array of ancient relics, including The Rosetta Stone, The Portland Vase, and The Parthenon Sculptures.
So, how did all of these timeless antiques end up in the West End of London? Well, while some were acquired by legitimate means, others were taken without permission, often from former British colonies.
In recent years, the museum has faced growing calls to return some of these pilfered pieces, from national governments as well as campaign groups.
So far, it has mostly resisted these appeals; but as the pressure continues to build, who knows what the future holds for this London landmark!
